The Mapna Group has designed processes to ensure the continuous improvement of employee competencies and qualifications by identifying their training needs and providing the necessary training for all of the employees, including Mapna employees, contractors and subcontractors (Figure 7). Training might be carried in the form of internal courses, external courses, On-the-job training, and reeducation programs – or even by monitoring the employees’ performance and providing them with the necessary feedback.

Monitoring and Measuring Environmental Performance

To evaluate the environmental performance, the Mapna Group deploys the ISO14031 standard approach. This standard follows the PDCA cycle of management. The stages of this cycle are as follows:

  1. A) Plan: This stage includes the designing and selection of parameters. For selecting the parameters, it is possible to use already existing parameters or define new ones.
  1. B) Do: This stage includes the following items:
  1. Collecting information related to the selected parameters
  2. Analyzing and transforming information to data for describing environmental performance
  3. Comparing the available data with the criteria for assessing environmental performance
  4. Reporting and exchanging data related to environmental performance

C and D) Check and Act: at these two stages, EPE processes are reviewed and adjusted.

Based on the ISO14031 standard, EPE indicators are divided into 3 categories:

  1. Management Performance Indicator (MPI): This indicator provides the necessary information about the manager’s efforts and its impact on environmental performance. MPI should provide the necessary information about the organization’s capabilities and efforts in the management of issues such as training, legal requirements, resource allocation, environmental costs, purchasing and product development.
  1. Operational Performance Indicator (OPI): This indicator represents the environmental performance of an organization’s processes. OPI provides information for managing the environmental performance of an organization’s processes.
  1. Environmental Condition Indicator (ECI): This indicator provides information about an organization’s performance and its effect on the local, regional, national and global states of the environment. ECI shows the relationship between an organization’s activities, products and services on the one hand and state of the environment on the other.
