In recent years, MAPNA Group has placed massive emphasis on broadening its horizons into new businesses in order to keep up its growth rate. To achieve long-term objectives, including diversification of activities, investment in new fields is deemed as the first step.
Considering Iran’s limited water resources, private sector investment in the water and wastewater industry is both required and unavoidable. MAPNA Group is attempting to address this problem by investing in the country’s water business under build-own-operate (BOO) and build-own-transfer (BOT) contracts.
As a result, MAPNA Investment Projects Division, which is in charge of the Group’s investments, has carried out several projects in the key sector through direct investment. The conglomerate is currently engaged in a number of similar projects.
Qeshm Power and Water Cogeneration Project
In the early 2010s, MAPNA Group MAPNA established Qeshm Water and Electricity Generation Company to help supply water and power in southern Hormozgan Province. The first investment MAPNA made in the business is the Qeshm Power and Water Cogeneration project, comprising two units each of 25 MW (total 50 MW under ISO condition) and 18,000 cubic meters of water per day. Both 25 MW units are worked out and water desalination unit, erected 750 meters off the coast, was inaugurated in 2014.
The implementation of the EPC scheme which was financed by MAPNA Group under BOO, was assigned to MAPNA Special Projects Construction and Development Company (MD-3).
The main equipment used in this project, such as gas turbines, generators, recovery boilers, desalination plants, etc., are all MAPNA products, made by the Group’s factories.
Potable Water Bottling Plant in Qeshm Island
MAPNA Qeshm Water and Power Generation Company lunched its potable water bottling plant in 2019 in southern Qeshm Island. The project includes filtration, processing and mineralization of the generated water. The plant has a nominal capacity of 10,000 bottles per hour, which would consume 200 cubic meters of the water generated by the power plant. The plant is built in a patch of land of about one hectare, which has included the land necessary for future expansion of the project. The company is currently delivering drinking water bottles of 0.5 and 1.5 liters under the brand name “Mangro” (named after mangrove forests of Qeshm Island). The project has incorporated facilities manufactured locally inside the country.
Bushehr (Lian) Desalination Plant
The construction operation of the project to supply potable water to residents in small towns in Bushehr Province kicked off in 2018. The new plant, built in the form of BOO contracts, is based on SWRO mechanism and is able to produce 35,000 cubic meters of drinking water on a daily basis that is enough for 68,000 people.
MAPNA Group and its subsidiaries are assigned with the design, procurement, implementation, installation, and commissioning of the desalination plant.
ESCO Sewage Treatment Plant
Sanitary and industrial effluents are important sources of unconventional water that can be treated and used in agriculture and industry, especially the industries located in the central parts of Iran, where there is no access to the seawater.
Taking into account its social responsibility and concerns about national challenges, MAPNA Group established MAPNA Novin Water Development Company in 2020 to take on investment, engineering, construction, implementation, and operation of water and wastewater treatment projects.
The Group is building a sewage treatment plant for Esfahan Steel Company (ESCO) under a BOT contract. A number of MAPNA subsidiaries are engaged in the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) of the plant.
The plant will process 850 cubic meters per hour of effluent into soft water and industrial water with a treatment rate of 90 percent. Some 550 cubic meters of the input water will be supplied from untreated human sewage and 300 cubic meters will be industrial wastewater.
The project is MAPNA Group’s first investment in wastewater treatment business. Challenges of water scarcity in Iran have increased the importance of sewage treatment. The contract is for 15 years and entails treated wastewater purchase agreement for a volume of 6.6 cubic meters per year.
Parand Combined Cycle Power Plant’s Sewage Treatment Complex
MAPNA Group has pre-purchased the untreated human sewage of Parand county – a semi-arid region southwest of Tehran – to supply the water demand for Parand Combined Cycle Power Plant. The move will also help MAPNA participate in the infrastructural development of Parand county.
Expansion of wastewater network has been a priority in the sprawling capital in recent decades, but lack of funds in addition to rapid expansion of urban areas has slowed, and at times hampered, the process.
The sewage will be transferred to the power plant via a 6.5km pipeline, and after storage and additional treatment, will enter the power plant’s treatment complex. The construction operation of the supplementary wastewater treatment complex for Parand Power Plant commenced in 2019 and is currently underway.
