PMS/PDCS Systems for Island Mode Power Plants
A power management system is essential for industrial plants that need an optimized and stable electrical network. This system controls and monitors the production and consumption of electricity in the grid, both in the mode of connection to the national grid and in the mode of island operation.
Island operation means that the plant operates independently from the national grid, which is required for some critical facilities such as oil rigs, refineries, LNG complexes, large industrial complexes, and petrochemical complexes.
Components of Power Management System (PMS)
The power management system consists of the following hardware components:
– A central programmable logic controller (PLC) that runs the main program of the system and makes decisions based on the data collected from other components.
– Several remote data collection stations (Remote IO) that are installed in different locations where the system needs signals, such as the local control rooms of the production units, the power plant substations, and the downstream substations (island consumer substations).
– An optical fiber network that connects the central PLC and the remote data collection stations, and allows for data transmission and command delivery.
The power management system works by sending and receiving data and commands through the optical fiber network. The remote data collection stations gather signals from their locations and send them to the central PLC. The central PLC processes the data and sends orders and set points to the production units and downstream substations. This way, the system can control and monitor the electrical network in both modes of operation.
PMS Projects in MECO
One of the important functions of power plants today is the ability to operate in island mode. This means that the power plants can operate independently from the national grid, which is required for various reasons, especially in oil and gas industries.
MAPNA Group, as a major power plant developer, has created the island mode capability for the power plants that are under construction, in order to meet the needs of the customers and the contracts, and to align with the goals of the electricity production market.
It was crucial for MECO, as the developer of power and control systems, to implement new projects with specialized support. The South Pars centralized power plant project serves as a prime example of MECO’s power management system (PMS) design and production. This PMS system underwent successful testing in real operational conditions, representing a significant milestone in MAPNA Group’s power plants’ island mode operation. MECO’s experts extensively tested the PMS system and the results were thoroughly compiled and documented.
Advantages
MECO’s PMS holds several advantages over its domestic competitors. Firstly, it possesses extensive knowledge and can effectively utilize hardware from any brand, while also having the flexibility to make necessary program logic adjustments. In comparison to foreign competitors, MECO’s PMS stands out in terms of cost reduction, as well as offering convenient and accessible repair services, updates, and after-sales support.
