The thirtieth edition of Khwarizmi International Award (KIA) ended on Monday, February 13, 2017, with the second prize in an engineering subcategory granted to a MAPNA Group project.
The IGV+ initiative, developed by a group of researchers in MAPNA Turbine Engineering and Manufacturing Company (TUGA) was the runner-up in Development Research section of the competition.
Abbas Eshaghi received the award on behalf TUGA research team from Mohammad Farhadi, Minister of Science, Research, and Technology.
No participant in the development research section was granted the top prize this year.
The IGV+ initiative boosts the output of MGT-70 turbines by optimizing inlet guide vanes of the gas turbine.
The design was initially put to test in Pareh Sar (northern Iran) and Yazd (central Iran) power plants in early 2015. It was implemented in Ferdowsi (Tous) Power Plant in northeast of the country in March 2015 after approval by Iran’s Ministry of Power’s Thermal Power Plant Holding. The regulatory body for national dispatching network approved the initiative afterwards due to its huge potential to boost capacity of MGT-70 turbines in a short period of time.
The IGV+ technology was authorized by Organization for Generation, Transmission and Distribution of Electric Power in Iran (TAVANIR) and Thermal Power Plant Holding in April 2015 following its successful test.
Thirteen domestic innovations and six international projects from France, Sweden, Canada, Britain, Italy, Russia and Tunisia also received trophies in the 30th edition of Khwarizmi International Awards.
Founded by Iranian Research Organization for Science and Technology (IROST) in 1987, the Khwarizmi Award honors outstanding achievements in the fields of science and technology.
