Tehran to Get 950 Electric Chargers from MAPNA’s MECO in New Deal

Tehran Municipality and MAPNA Electric & Control Engineering & Manufacturing Company (MECO) signed a new contract on Wednesday, March 2, 1402, for the design, construction and installation of 96 charging stations for electric vehicles in Tehran.

The deal is part of the country’s efforts to reduce air pollution in the cities by promoting the use of electric vehicles.

The signing ceremony was attended by the mayor of Tehran Alireza Zakani and the CEOs of MECO and a subsidiary department of Tehran Municipality.

The contract stipulates that 950 AC and DC chargers for light and heavy electric vehicles will be set up and operated in the capital. The 96 stations will include 21 for electric buses and 75 for electric taxis.

The charges include 400 AC 22 kW chargers, 150 DC 60 kW chargers, 150 DC 120 kW chargers and 250 DC 240 kW chargers. They will be distributed across the city based on the infrastructure and needs of different regions.

MECO’s electrification center, as the executive arm of MAPNA Group, has been working to expand the smart charging infrastructure of electric vehicles in the past years, with the aim of fulfilling its social responsibility and environmental goals. The company hopes that the charging network and the energy supply of electric vehicles will become more accessible and convenient for the citizens in the future.

One of the prerequisites for achieving this goal is the establishment of electric vehicle charging stations across the country. In this regard, MAPNA Group has taken a significant step to develop the smart charging network in line with the electrification policy and global standards.

This contract is considered a crucial step in the implementation of the large-scale project of electrifying the public transport of the Iranian capital.

MAPNA Group delivered 15 charging stations to Tehran Municipality in August last year as part of another contract.

EVs are becoming more popular globally, but they are still relatively new to the Iranian market. Like in other parts of the world, there are several challenges to the growth of the EV market in Iran, including the need for diverse technological developments in power equipment, electric motors, control systems, and batteries. However, one of the biggest concerns is the development of the necessary infrastructure for recharging these vehicles. To address this issue, MAPNA Group has undertaken a mission that involves producing EV conversion kits and building electric vehicle charging stations (EVCSs). MAPNA launched Iran’s first EV charging station back in May 2019 in the capital Tehran.
