Iran’s first electric vehicle charging station got in operation on Wednesday, May 22nd, 2019.
The station is located in an area of 700 square meters in the vicinity of Tehran’s landmark Milad Tower.
Attending the ribbon-cutting ceremony was Tehran mayor Pirouz Hanachi who stressed promotion of electric vehicles.
“Tehran Municipality will collaborate with knowledge-based companies such as MAPNA Group to indigenize EV power stations, promote production of EVs and reduce fossil fuel consumption and emission,” he said.
Hanachi meanwhile highlighted the importance of mass production of electric motorcycles to tackle the environmental pollution problem in Tehran.
Speaking to the press, MAPNA Group President Abbas Aliabadi also addressed the environmental challenges of Tehran and other larger cities, and called for promotion of electrification as a solution to tackle the fossil fuel pollution problem.
He expressed hope that more charging stations would come into operation across Iran in collaboration with municipalities of Tehran and other cities.
Pointing to MAPNA Group’s homegrown EV charging station, Aliabadi stressed that electrification is a fully feasible technical mission.
“We can convert natural gas to electricity in high-efficiency combined cycle power plants and use the generated power for the transportation sector. This will lead to a sharp drop in fuel consumption,” he reminded.
“MAPNA Group is ready to collaborate with auto manufacturers and Taxi Organization of Tehran to upgrade Iran’s transportation system,” Aliabadi added.
“Iran’s electrification infrastructure excel the global average,” he said. “Eighty thousand megawatts of power generation capacity are already in operation and 20 thousand megawatts of power plant are also under construction, providing the resources needed for electrification of vehicles.”
Iran’s first EV charging station includes a 43-kW AC charger – applicable to standard electric vehicles- and a fast charger working under CHAdeMO protocol which suits Japanese and Korean EVs such as KIA, Nissan, and Mitsubishi. The station also includes a 7.4-kW slow charger, and a 5.5-kW chargers for electric motor cycles.
The station’s inauguration ceremony was attended by Tehran Mayor, Tehran City Council members, Vice-Chairman of Parliament’s Energy Committee, Managing Director of Thermal Power Plants Holding Company, Deputy Power Minister and head of Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Organization (SATBA), Managing Director of Tehran Taxi Organization, and MAPNA Group’s senior executives.
