MAPNA, Mashhad Municipality Sign Contract for Bus Electrification

MAPNA Electric & Control Engineering & Manufacturing Company (MECO) and Municipality of Mashhad have signed a contract for electrification of the city's transportation system.

MAPNA Electric & Control Engineering & Manufacturing Company (MECO) and Municipality of Mashhad have signed a contract for electrification of the city’s transportation system.

The scope of the contract includes electrification of one diesel bus unit, feasibility studies for electrification of the city’s BRT (bus rapid transit) system, and construction of three electric vehicle charging stations.

Speaking on the sidelines of the signing ceremony, head of Mashhad Municipality Planning and Development Department Shahriar Al-e Sheikh called electrification of the urban bus system “a major step in promotion of clean energy and environmental conservation”.

CEO of MAPNA Electric & Control Engineering & Manufacturing Company (MECO) Mohammad Hossein Refan also provided details about the contract. Pointing to construction of Iran’s first electric vehicle charging station in Tehran in May 2019,  he said that the company will soon begin construction of Mashhad’s first EV charging station.

The charging station provides services for both electric bus and electric vehicles, Refan added.     

MECO CEO stated that MAPNA Group will also carry out a detailed feasibility study for electrification of Mashhad infrastructure.

The bus fleet of Mashhad, Iran’s second largest city, includes 1697 buses running on 136 routes. The city’s BRT system operates with 99 bus units that transport more than 2.5 million passengers per month. More than 12 thousand taxi cars are also active on 163 routes.
