MAPNA Upgrades Shahrud Power Plant Turbine to Homegrown MGT-70 (3)

MAPNA Group technicians have upgraded a V94.2 (5) turbine in Shahrud thermal power plant o the homegrown MGT-70 (3).

MAPNA Group technicians have upgraded a V94.2 (5) turbine in Shahrud thermal power plant o the homegrown MGT-70 (3).

The upgrade increases nominal capacity of the power plant from 162 megawatts to 183 at ISO conditions.

Efficiency will also improve to 36.2 percent. The previous rate stood at 34.2.

The upgrade is also expected to save 18.5 million cubic meters of LNG per year and cut back CO2 emissions by six percent.

The upgrade and overhaul operations were commissioned to MAPNA Group in March 2019 and were carried out in two months despite the dire conditions imposed by the Coronavirus pandemic.

The upgrade is expected to improve the turbine’s performance under intense temperature conditions, and enhance turbine bearing vibrations. The interval between overhaul and hot gas path inspection will also increase from 33 thousand hours to 41 thousand EOH (equivalent operating hours).

MGT-70 (3) is the third version of upgrades MAPNA has been carrying out on V94.2 (5) turbines. It includes major redesign of the turbine’s main components, including new 3D blades and vanes, enhanced cooling and sealing, optimized SAS, new base material and coatings, new 3D design for compressor blades, new design for journal-thrust bearing, new mechanical limit, and new design for air filtration.

MAPNA Group has the capacity of upgrading 25 to 30 V94.2 (5) turbines to MGT-70 (3) turbines per year. Upgrading the entire V94.2 (5) fleet operating in Iranian power plants can add an extra 5000 MWs of electricity generation capacity to Iran’s power network.

Shahrud Thermal Power Plants consists of two gas-fired units each with a capacity of 162 MWs at ISO conditions.

The power plant is located 15 kilometers west of Shahrud, on the road to Damghan and next to a 230-kv substation.

The main components of the power plant are manufactured by MAPNA Group.

Pouya Energy Production and Development Company is the owner of Shahrud Power Plant and client of the project. MAPNA Group serves as the major contractor.
