100,000-Hour Life Extension Overhaul Completed at Genaveh Combined Cycle Power Plant

Specialists from MAPNA Group have completed the 100,000-hour life extension (LTE) overhaul of the second gas unit and the steam unit at the Genaveh Combined Cycle Power Plant, during the low-load season of Iran’s power grid.

With the power sector entering a period of reduced demand, planned inspections and overhauls play a key role in boosting generation readiness. They also improve efficiency and help prevent forced outages.

Based on coordinated planning among key stakeholders, and with permits from the Iran Grid Management Company and coordination with the Thermal Power Generation Holding Company, the 100,000-hour overhaul was carried out successfully.

The work on the second gas unit and the steam unit was executed by MAPNA Group Power Services Company. It relied on the technical capabilities of MAPNA Group subsidiaries and the round-the-clock efforts of the plant’s staff.

The main objectives of the 100,000-hour LTE overhaul were clear. They included enabling a new operating life cycle with reliability close to that of a new turbine.

Other goals were reducing operational risks, lowering unplanned outages, and recovering part of the lost efficiency.

At the Genaveh plant, the simultaneous overhaul of the two units involved a wide range of work scopes and a high volume of activities. This approach was adopted by MAPNA Genaveh Power Generation Company to shorten the outage period and accelerate the declaration of unit readiness.

The overhauls were carried out in line with manufacturer guidelines. They were also based on operating history and the results of periodic inspections.

For the gas turbine unit, key activities included the replacement of stationary and rotating blades, replacement of hot-gas-path components, bearing modifications, remaining life assessment tests of main equipment, and full servicing of auxiliary systems. Electrical tests, stator insulation repairs, and final gas turbine rotor overspeed tests were also completed.

For the steam unit’s 100,000-hour overhaul, the scope included steam turbine disassembly and clearance measurements. Non-destructive testing of blades and casings was performed. Boiler feedwater pumps were overhauled. Main steam and HP and LP bypass valves were refurbished. Boiler harp thickness measurements were conducted. Generator stator bus insulation was corrected, boiler valves were repaired and rebuilt, and all auxiliary equipment was fully serviced.

After completion of the LTE overhauls and successful technical tests, the second gas unit was safely synchronized to the national grid on February 7, 2026. The steam unit followed on February 15, 2026.

Both units are now operating reliably. They are expected to play an important role in maintaining grid stability during the summer peak of 2026.

The Genaveh Combined Cycle Power Plant has a nominal capacity of 484 megawatts. It is located on a 42-hectare site at kilometer 18 of the Genaveh–Bushehr road.

MAPNA Genaveh Power Generation Company, a subsidiary of MAPNA Iranian Power Plant Management Company, is the owner and investor of the plant.
