MAPNA Group has officially started the development of the steam section for Aliabad gas power plant in Golestan Province, north of Iran.
The project was inaugurated in a ceremony on December 21, 2023, at the power plant site, with the presence of high-ranking officials, such as Energy Minister Ali Akbar Mehrabian and Economy Minister Ehsan Khandouzi.
The contract for the project was signed two days before the ceremony, between MAPNA Group and Azarakhsh Power Plant Company. According to the contract, MAPNA Group will design, engineer, supply, construct, install, and commission the steam section, which will include three steam turbines, each with a capacity of 160 MW under ISO conditions, and six heat recovery steam generators (HRSGs) with supplementary firing.
The project is part of the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) scheme, in which the contractor is a consortium of MAPNA subsidiaries, led by the MAPNA Power Plant Construction and Development Company (MD-1 Company).
An official from Aliabad power plant said that the project will create 700 direct and 300 indirect jobs during the construction phase, and 100 permanent jobs after the completion.
The project will increase the efficiency of the power plant from 32% to 50%, and reduce its fuel consumption and environmental impact.
Ehsan Khandouzi, the economy minister, also spoke at the ceremony, emphasizing the need to balance the production and consumption of water and electricity in the province.
He said that the development of water and electricity infrastructure is a vital issue for the region, which has a higher-than-average unemployment rate compared to the national average.
The steam section will be added to the existing gas section of Aliabad power plant, which was built by the same consortium in 2010.
The gas section consists of six gas turbine generator units, each with 162 MW and a total capacity of 972 MW.
The plant, located in Aliabad Katoul in the northeastern province of Golestan, is one of the largest gas-fired power plants in Iran and uses V94.2 type (version 5) turbines manufactured by MAPNA. The steam section project is expected to be completed in three years.
