MAPNA Group to Expand Aliabad Gas Power Plant with Steam Section

MAPNA Group has signed a contract with the Azarakhsh Power Plant Company to develop the steam section of the Aliabad gas power plant in the northern province of Golestan.

The project, which will increase the efficiency of the power plant from 32 to 50 percent, is expected to be completed in three years.

The contract was signed on December 19, 2023, in a ceremony attended by MAPNA Group President Mohammad Owliya, Head of Mostazafan Foundation Hossein Dehghan, and Golestan Governor Ali Mohammad Zanganeh.

According to the contract, MAPNA Group will be responsible for the design, engineering, supply, construction, installation, and commissioning of the steam section, which will consist of three steam turbines, each with a nominal capacity of 160 MW under ISO conditions, and six HRSGs with supplementary firing.

The project is part of the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) scheme, in which the contractor is a consortium of MAPNA subsidiaries, including the MAPNA Power Plant Construction and Development Company (MD-1 Company).

The steam section will be added to the existing gas section of the Aliabad power plant, which was built by the same consortium in 2010. The gas section comprises six gas turbine generator units, each with 162 MW and a total nominal capacity of 972 MW.

The Aliabad power plant, located in Aliabad Katoul in the northeastern province of Golestan, is one of the largest gas-fired power plants in Iran and uses V94.2 type (version 5) turbines manufactured by MAPNA. The project aims to improve the performance and reliability of the power plant, as well as to reduce its environmental impact and fuel consumption. The project will also contribute to the development and electrification of the northern and north-eastern regions of Iran, which face high demand for electricity, especially in the winter.
