MAPNA Wins Bid to Build Water Pumping Stations for National Desalination, Transfer Project

MAPNA Group has been awarded a contract to design, supply, and build three water pumping stations in Sistan and Baluchistan province. The stations are part of a national project to transfer desalinated water from the Oman Sea to the eastern regions of Iran.
The project, known as Ps2, Ps3, and Ps4, will be located at heights of about 274, 370, and 640 meters above sea level, respectively. Each station will consist of a 40,000 cubic meter concrete tank, ten 5-MW electric pumps, and auxiliary facilities.
The project is expected to take 30 months to complete, with 18 months for Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) and 12 months for operation. The contract does not include the water transmission lines.
The project is supervised by Industries and Mines Water Supply Company, which was established in 2021 to provide water for industrial and mining activities in the eastern provinces. The company is responsible for implementing the national desalination plan and seawater transfer system to the region.
The main objective of the plan is to desalinate water from the Oman Sea and distribute it to support various industries and mines in the eastern provinces. The plan also aims to achieve several other goals, such as:

  • Ensuring sustainable water resources for the region
  • Developing water infrastructure for regional growth
  • Meeting water demands for industries and large-scale projects
  • Promoting the development of mining and petrochemical industries
  • Creating employment opportunities and preventing migration
  • Stabilizing the population in the eastern region
  • Addressing drinking water shortages in cities and villages along the route
  • Improving underground water conditions and preventing salinization
  • Stimulating economic development along the Makran coast
  • Achieving balanced wealth distribution and enhancing social justice
  • Maintaining stable security in eastern borders and reducing external threats

The plan is vital for the development of the eastern provinces, which have suffered from water scarcity for a long time. Sistan and Baluchistan, South Khorasan, and Khorasan Razavi are among the most water-stressed provinces in Iran.
The lack of water has hampered the growth of industrial and mining sectors in these areas and caused migration to major cities. The plan aims to address these challenges by providing a reliable source of water from the sea.
This is the first time that MAPNA Group has participated in the national desalination project for the country’s water transmission system. The conglomerate has extensive experience and expertise in engineering and construction projects, especially in the power generation sector.
