Wagon Pars will deliver the contract in two phases, handling everything from design and supply to static and dynamic testing.
The first five-car set is already under construction in the Wagon Pars factory and is scheduled to move to Qom Metro for dynamic testing by the end of the Iranian year 1404 (March 2026).
The contract covers key subsystems of the metro cars: braking, propulsion, TCMS (Train Control & Monitoring System), electrical components, HVAC systems, door systems, gangways, couplers, and more.
After assembly, static tests are to be performed in the factory, and once approved, the train is to be moved to the client’s depot for dynamic tests. If successful, the train will enter service on Qom Metro Line A.
This marks the first time a fully designed and built metro train is to be delivered by an Iranian company. The success of this project can pave the way for similar contracts for five-car metro lines in other Iranian cities.
MAPNA’s Wagon Pars Company (WPCO) is Iran’s largest rolling stock manufacturer, producing freight wagons, passenger cars, locomotives, subway cars, and bogies. MAPNA Group officially acquired Wagon Pars in December 2020 as part of a push to expand its role in the railway sector.
The company is based in Arak, with its head office in Tehran, and employs about 1,250 workers across a 354,000 m² facility. It already counts exports to several countries, and in March 2024 announced delivery of 200 wagons and locomotives domestically.
Wagon Pars’ product range includes freight wagons, passenger coaches, metro cars, and heavy locomotives in collaboration with global firms under license.
MAPNA’s broader railway ambitions are evident from recent projects. Wagon Pars recently won a contract to supply 60 urban light rail vehicles (LRVs) for Mashhad Metro Line 1. Meanwhile, MAPNA’s Railway Construction & Development Company, secured a contract to complete trackwork on the Baharestan–Isfahan Metro line.
In the past, MAPNA’s railway division won contracts for construction and equipment in lines including Tehran Metro Line 6 and infrastructure works in Isfahan.
