Planned overhauls are intended to improve unit readiness, increase efficiency, reduce fuel consumption, and prevent unplanned outages. In this framework, the long-term overhaul of the fifth gas unit was carried out by MAPNA Power Plants Operation and Maintenance Company, relying on the technical capabilities of MAPNA Group factories and the continuous efforts of the plant’s workforce.
The overhaul was conducted in line with the original equipment manufacturer’s guidelines. It was also based on operational history and the results of periodic inspections.
The scope of work included replacing stationary and rotating turbine blades, renewing hot gas path components such as the inner casing, mixing chamber, and flame tubes, and replacing bearings.
Additional activities covered residual life testing of major components, including rotor tie rods and compressor blades, full servicing of auxiliary equipment, electrical testing of generators and transformers, and restoration of generator stator insulation.
According to project details, the main objective of the 100,000-hour overhaul was to enable the gas turbine to enter a new operational life cycle with reliability close to that of a new unit.
Other goals included reducing operational risks, minimizing forced and unplanned outages, recovering part of the lost efficiency and output, and preparing the unit for future life extension combined with modernization and equipment upgrades.
Following completion of the LTE activities and the successful conclusion of technical tests, the fifth unit of the Ferdowsi Combined Cycle Power Plant was safely synchronized with the national grid on December 9, 2025.
The unit is expected to play a significant role in supporting grid stability during the summer peak of 2026.
In parallel, due to the construction of the plant’s third steam unit and the expected synchronization of that unit before the next peak demand period, installation and commissioning of the diverter damper for Unit 5 were also completed during the same timeframe. The diverter damper for Unit 6 had previously been installed in early autumn of the previous year.
The Ferdowsi Combined Cycle Power Plant has a nominal capacity of 1,292 megawatts. It is located on a 60-hectare site at kilometer 15 of the Mashhad–Quchan road. The plant is owned and invested in by Toos MAPNA Power Generation Company, a subsidiary of MAPNA Iranian Power Plants Management Holding, part of MAPNA Group.
