This initiative is part of MAPNA Group’s legal and social responsibilities aiming to protect groundwater resources in the Tous plain in Razavi Khorasan province. MAPNA Tous Power Generation Company – a subsidiary of MAPNA Iranian Power Plant Holding- was the investor and leader of the project.
The implementation of this project is a response to a regional challenge and a significant step toward reducing dependency on groundwater in a country located in an arid region. Ferdowsi CCPP has minimized its water consumption through optimization and internal recycling schemes, surpassing both domestic benchmarks and international standards.
The current critical state of groundwater resources in Razavi Khorasan province has necessitated the implementation of complementary and sustainable solutions. In accordance with the legal requirements stipulated in Iran’s 1402 Budget Law regarding the necessity of substituting conventional water sources for industrial units with non-conventional sources (wastewater), and through synergy between national executive bodies, the allocation of treated wastewater from Tous Industrial Town to Ferdowsi CCPP was secured through a long-term guaranteed purchase agreement. This project effectively makes the Ferdowsi CCPP independent of groundwater extraction.
The simultaneous implementation of the gas turbine inlet air cooling system (MEDIA) last year further underscored the importance of non-conventional water supply project. Launched during the peak of Iran’s hot summer and critical national electricity demand, this system has already improved the plant’s output by 90 MW—equivalent to continuously powering over 93,000 households, based on an average consumption of 300 kWh per month.
The Ferdowsi Combined‑Cycle Power Plant, which boasts a nominal capacity of 1,452 MW, is located about 25 km along the Quchan Road near Mashhad and is managed by MAPNA Tous Power Generation Company, under the umbrella of MAPNA Group.
