Amid peak electricity demand across Iran, MAPNA Group synchronized the 160-MW 3rd steam unit of Ferdowsi Combined Cycle Power Plant (CCPP) with a capacity of with the national grid.
The full commissioning of the steam units of Ferdowsi CCPP enhances the electricity generation capacity in northeastern Iran while improving the plant’s efficiency from 32% to 50%. The plant’s three steam units also save 750 million liters of diesel fuel annually and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Developed under a buyback agreement between the Thermal Power Plants Holding Company and MAPNA Tous Power Generation Company, the project includes the installation of three 160-MW steam units, with a total capacity of 480 MW.
Under the agreement, investment recovery is based on payments equivalent to the value of fuel savings achieved by the steam units over a period of two years. The project was executed by MAPNA Power Plant Construction and Development Company (MD-1) under an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) scheme, with MAPNA Group supplying core equipment.
With three combined cycle blocks and media cooling systems installed, Ferdowsi CCPP is the largest power plant in northeastern Iran with a total capacity of 1,542 MW. The commissioning of the 3rd steam unit further strengthens the grid stability and provides electricity for 350,000 households, based on an average consumption of 300 kWh per month.
Ferdowsi CCPP is located approximately 25 km along the Quchan Road near Mashhad and is managed by MAPNA Tous Power Generation Company, a subsidiary of MAPNA Group.
