Following the announcement of a tender in January 2017 (Dey 1395) by the Islamic Republic of Iran Railways (RAI) for the “Overhaul, Commissioning, Operation, Maintenance, and Ownership Transfer of 50 Alstom Locomotives under the R.O.O model,” the MAPNA Consortium—consisting of MAPNA Group, MAPNA Railway Operation, Repair and Maintenance Company, and MAPNA Locomotive Engineering and Manufacturing Company—participated in and won the tender.

Subsequently, MAPNA Railway Fleet Development Company was established and assigned as the lead entity to manage and execute the contract on behalf of the consortium.

Under this project, all 50 Alstom diesel-electric locomotives will be overhauled and recommissioned within 5 years. After 10 years of operation, their ownership will be transferred to MAPNA Group.

In this framework:

MAPNA Locomotive Engineering and Manufacturing Company is the primary contractor responsible for the overhaul and recommissioning of the locomotives.

MAPNA Railway Operation, Repair and Maintenance Company will handle the maintenance and operation of the fleet for a minimum of 10 years.

These 4,000-horsepower diesel-electric locomotives, previously manufactured by another consortium, had been decommissioned in recent years due to technical issues. With MAPNA’s involvement, the locomotives will be restored to service, contributing significantly to the country’s rail freight capacity.
