MAPNA Secures Tender to Supply 60 Urban Light Rail Vehicles for Mashhad Metro Line 1

MAPNA Group’s Wagon Pars Company (WPCO) has won a tender to supply 60 light rail vehicles (LRVs) for Line 1 of the Mashhad Urban Railway.

The contract was officially announced on September 15, 2025, by the Mayor of Mashhad.

As a sophisticated type of electric multiple units (EMU), the LRVs are designed to navigate tight urban curves and integrate seamlessly with city traffic, offering an efficient alternative to traditional metro systems. Unlike full metro lines, LRVs do not require extensive tunneling, making them a cost-effective solution for urban areas.

The LRVs will consist of three-car units, with the ability to couple multiple units to accommodate varying passenger volumes. This flexibility is particularly advantageous for cities experiencing fluctuating transit demands.

The project is expected to enhance public transportation accessibility and contribute to sustainable urban development in Mashhad.

This initiative is part of a broader effort to modernize Iran’s urban transit infrastructure and promote environmentally friendly transportation options.

Wagon Pars Company (WPCO) is Iran’s leading manufacturer of rail vehicles, including locomotives, passenger cars, and freight wagons. Established in 1974, the company began manufacturing rolling stock in 1984. WPCO’s factory in Arak spans 354,000 square meters and employs approximately 1,250 people. The company collaborates with international partners such as Alstom, Siemens, and Bombardier to produce advanced rail vehicles.
