The Sabalan Geothermal Power Plant, Iran’s first geothermal power plant, was successfully synchronized to the national electricity grid on July 22, 2026, marking a historic milestone in the country’s power industry and opening a new chapter in the development of renewable energy.
The project was commissioned for the Thermal Power Plants Holding Company (TPPH), with MAPNA Group’s Power Plant Services Company responsible for supervision and commissioning activities.
Before being connected to the national grid, the Sabalan Geothermal Power Plant successfully completed all phases of engineering, installation, commissioning, technical testing, and trial operation.
Constructed at an altitude of approximately 2,700 meters above sea level, the project is among the most technically challenging power plant developments undertaken in Iran due to its demanding geographical and climatic conditions.
Located on the slopes of the Sabalan Mountain Range, the project faced numerous challenges, including severe winter temperatures, heavy snowfall, blizzards, icy terrain, restricted access for transporting equipment, and a limited construction season. As Iran’s first geothermal power project, it also required the deployment of advanced technologies and systems being implemented in the country for the first time.
Despite these challenges, MAPNA’s engineers and project teams successfully achieved the plant’s synchronization through technical expertise, meticulous planning, and unwavering commitment. This accomplishment is not only a significant engineering milestone but also a testament to MAPNA Group’s capability to execute complex strategic infrastructure projects under some of the most demanding environmental conditions.
By harnessing the Earth’s geothermal energy, the Sabalan Geothermal Power Plant generates electricity without relying on fossil fuels during the power generation process. The project contributes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, lowering fossil fuel consumption, strengthening energy security, and supporting the country’s long-term sustainable development.
